| Secretary Michael DiBerardinis Department of Conservation and Natural Resources P.O. Box 8767 400 Market St. Harrisburg, PA 17105-8767 Today’s Date Re: Miller Mountain, Eaton Township, Wyoming County Dear Secretary DiBerardinis: I’m writing to express my support for the public acquisition of Miller Mountain. I encourage DCNR to purchase the mountain to become a state forest open to public outdoor recreation. Miller Mountain is a beautiful and popular landmark and is located in a county without a state park or forest, the only such county in North-central and Northeast Pennsylvania. This mountain represents the last opportunity to preserve a significant amount of open space in the county, which is facing increased development from the Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre metro area. Acquiring the mountain will also protect watersheds, provide for habitats and wildlife, and present significant opportunities for outdoor recreation and nature-based tourism. It is also believed Miller Mountain is the last undeveloped mountain peak in the state. The parcels are near the Susquehanna River and border extensively along Bowmans Creek, a popular trout stream. The land is also excellent wild turkey habitat. Acquisition of this land would provide incredible opportunities for a variety of interests, whether it be hunting, fishing, hiking, kayaking, horseback riding, mountain biking, cross country skiing, primitive camping, and wildlife watching or nature study. The mountain can become a popular tourist destination. The scenic value of the mountain is significant as it rises dramatically over the Susquehanna River and Tunkhannock. The views from the mountain are breathtaking; Miller Mountain also has some of the highest vertical drops in the state. It is also important to note all local elected officials support this project. I hope DCNR will support efforts to preserve Miller Mountain and make such acquisition a priority. This may be the last opportunity to preserve this beautiful mountain for the benefit of the public and future generations. Sincerely,
