The
Tunkhannock Public Library in Progress
Construction
of the new Tunkhannock Public Library,
designed by Thomas C. Horlacher, A.I.A., began in August of
2000,
with
Milnes Companies
as General Contractors.
The old library
building, built in the late
19th century, has
outlived its
usefulness.
Lack
of parking, lack of handicap accessibility, and crowded
conditions led to the campaign to build a new library.
The new
building is located
at 220 West Tioga St.
The attractive brick exterior with its eyebrow
window will have lots of parking and will be
beautifully landscaped.
Inside the building will be
a Community Room that
seats 75 people and will be available for
organizations
to use as a meeting room. |
There will be a drive
through book drop so patrons can
return books when the library is
closed. |
The building has been
designed to bring the outside in. A reading area looks out on what will be a landscaped
garden area and a view of the mountains.
The building is all on one
floor,
with a feeling of openness. |
The different ceiling
heights and light treatment
will help designate individual areas. |
Opening off the
children’s
book area is a door to the community room which will make it convenient to hold children’s programs in there. |
A section of the Community
Room will be usable
for word processing and quiet study. |
Having room in their office
means the staff will be
able to keep away from public view the clutter
associated
with
processing books. |
The window in the staff
office lets in light and provides a
view of route 6. |
